As of yesterday...two weeks after the girls began laying beautiful brown eggs for our family...our egg tally was 33. Not bad, eh? I shared a half dozen with my aunt Lisa and another half dozen to my neighbor...poor guy has to hear them every morning as they work those eggs down the chute! He said he doesn't mind them at all...and that the noises make him laugh...and that he was going to go make an omelet! He did inquire about the flies...and I offered to buy him a stinky trap...but he declined the offer. I guess fresh eggs are a fair enough trade.

If you were my neighbor, I'd take fresh eggs as a trade off any day of the week.
Those fresh eggs definitely taste better than those from the store.
Cracking up over the 'down the chute' bit. So the chickens attract lots of flies huh?
we have so much in common.
YES - flies
YES - egg tally
YES - loud chickens
Nice work girls!
i've always had chickens as neighbors and never minded, even the roosters. my ex was from the city and NEVER adjusted to the roosters.
i know you are loving those eggs. and i bet those yolks are so super orangey, yummy!
I bet those eggs taste really good! I love fried eggs with sourdough toast.
33 is a lot of eggs. I'm impressed with those girls!
Yea for eggs!! I think I have about 2 doz. in the refer now. Been giving them away.. Thinking about freezing some as per our favorite backyard homesteading book. The ladies ate a frog the other day. LARGE frog. I was shocked...and I have to say...a bit sick..
Nothing like fresh eggs from your own little hens! We loved hearing our hens sing when they first started laying. Now, we're anticipating that day with our new chicks, who are growing fast.
Congratulations on your bounty!
My girls are noisy too! Thankfully my widowed neighbor doesn't mind :-)
As for the flies - with all our humidity down here in Florida, the flies came in droves once it started getting warmer. I read about using diatomaceous earth to dust their bedding (I put down a thick layer of pine shavings with the DE mixed in), and I put it in their feed. After about 2 weeks - no more flies. Plus the DE helps with moisture and smell as well.
flmom2boys...THANK YOU!! I will definitely use the diatomaceous earth...I have some for the garden on the shelf!
